Why do I desperately want to wear a corset?
Bridgerton comes back this Thursday and why am I suddenly so obsessed again? We were all mystified when Daphne and Simon kissed in the rain. It was scandalous and forbidden which made it that much more intriguing. Everyone wanted the soft makeup look worn by Phoebe Dynevor and then she dated Pete Davidson I think (?) which is such a wild side quest. Then came season two which brought my favorite, enemies to lovers bursting with tension. And here comes season three, starring my favorite, Nicola Coughlan.
As excited as I am, I’m not actually here to talk about Bridgerton but more about what it represents. When I took a British literature class two years ago we discussed the regency period, in which Bridgerton takes place, and that media was fascinated with it when it was quite a short period of time. The regency period only lasted about nine years, from 1811 to 1820. Bridgerton is one of many to take place during this period, with “Regency Drama” even being its own genre. Most notably, Jane Austen’s works take place around the same time, more romantic pieces of media. I even believe that in The Tortured Poets Department when Taylor Swift said she’d want to live in the 1830’s, she was trying to reference the Regency Period, but I digress.
The Regency Period was a time when nobility flourished in London, so we can see why we often go back to it. All anyone cared about at that time was having tense and dramatic love stories, ones that would be told for decades to come. But when we see what Bridgerton has done, taking an already romanticized time period and creating its own world with its own costuming rules based upon it, I can only admire it. Especially with the modern pop song covers as the soundtrack, it cannot be topped. As the new season arrives, how could I not be excited?
I lied I guess I am just here to talk about Bridgerton. But also this is maybe my fifth return to this blog? And I promise this one will stick, whatever I write it’ll be something each week, whatever I’m currently pondering. I’ll also include my song of the week and current read.
Song: Cinderella by Remi Wolf
Current Read: Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld
Peace out!
